# Tags

A tag is a label you can add to any item. An item can have any number of tags, and a tag can be used on items in any collection, which makes tags the way to group things across collections.

This guide covers the web and desktop app first. See On iOS and Android for the mobile apps.

See Collections for how collections work.

# Adding and Creating Tags

  • Add tags to an item from its save or edit form with Add Tags.
  • To tag several items at once, select them and use the bulk action bar.
  • Create a tag with Create Tag, or by typing a new name in the tag field.
  • Tag names can be 1 to 30 characters long.

# Renaming a Tag

1. Right-click the tag in the sidebar.

2. Choose Rename. The name becomes editable in place.

3. Type the new name and press Enter (or click away) to save.

The right-click menu also has Nested Tag, Change Icon, color, Select, Favorite, Pin to Sidebar, Move, Make Private, and Delete.

To show an Add Tag button directly on item cards, turn on Display Add Tag Button in Settings → Card Action Bars.

# Suggested Tags

With Suggested Tags turned on (it is on by default), the tag field shows suggestions in three groups:

  • Recent: tags you used recently.
  • Existing: tags already in your library.
  • New: suggested new tags. Picking one creates it.

You can turn suggestions off, or change which groups appear and in what order, in Settings → Tags.

# Nested Tags

Tags can have child tags. For example, a travel tag can have the child tags japan and italy.

  • Use Nested Tag to add a child tag under an existing tag.
  • Turn on Hierarchical Tags in Settings → Tags to show tags as a tree. It is off by default.

# Customizing How Tags Look

These options are in Settings → Tags:

  • Tag Style: Simple (default), Underline, Hollow, or Filled.
  • Tag Colors: on by default. Each tag shows its color. The palette is orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink, and gray.
  • Hide Tag Icon/Emoji/Hashtag: hides the icon, emoji, or # shown before tag names. Off by default.

Each tag can also have its own color, icon, and description, and can be marked as a favorite.

# Filtering and Searching by Tag

In the search bar:

  • Type # followed by part of a tag name (for example #des) to list matching tags.

In search queries and filters:

  • #design shows items tagged design.
  • -#design shows items not tagged design.
  • #travel/* shows items tagged travel or any of its child tags (such as japan and italy).
  • Several tag filters must all match by default. Add match:OR to the query to match any of them instead.

Filters also offer With Tags and Without Tags (Untagged), so you can find items that still need tagging.

# Merging Tags

To combine duplicate or overlapping tags:

1. On the Tags page, select between two and five tags.

2. Click Merge Tags in the bulk action bar (it only appears when 2–5 tags are selected).

3. Choose one of them as the merge target, then confirm.

Every item that had one of the other tags gets the target tag instead, child tags of the merged tags move under the target, and the other tags are deleted.

A merge is blocked when the target is a child of one of the tags being merged, when you mix private and non-private tags, or when private tags are involved and Private Mode is locked.

# Removing Tags

  • To remove tags from items, select the items and use Remove Tags. You can Remove Specific Tags or Remove All Tags.
  • Remove Unused Tags (in the sidebar's Tags menu) deletes tags that no item uses.
  • The sidebar's Tags menu also has Collapse Tags and sort options.

# On iOS and Android

The iOS and Android apps work the same way.

  • Your tags are on the Home tab, in the Tags section, with item counts. Tap a tag to see its items.
  • Create a tag: tap + on the Tags section header.
  • Long-press a tag for Nested Tag, Change Icon, Rename, Edit, color, Favorite, Pin to Sidebar, Make Private, and Delete.
  • Swipe a tag for quick Nested Tag, Edit, and Delete actions.

The tag form has an icon, name, description, color, parent tag, Favorite, and Make Private.

# Tagging from the Share Sheet

When you share a link to CherryPic from another app, the share screen depends on Share sheet in Settings → Theme:

  • Form share (default): a full form. Tap Collection to pick one from your collection tree, search for one, choose None, or type a new name and tap Create "…". Add tags in the same form.
  • Quick share: the link saves automatically after a short countdown (3 seconds on iOS, 15 seconds on Android). To file it first, tap Add Tags/Notes, then type @ to pick a collection or # to pick tags. You can also create a new collection or tag from there, and mark the link Favorite or Read later.

# Private Tags

Private tags use the same Private Mode password as private collections. There is no separate password per tag.

  • Make a tag private: right-click it in the sidebar and choose Make Private. Its child tags become private too.
  • Unlock: choose Enter Private Mode and type your password. The first time, you'll Set Password instead.
  • Lock: choose Exit Private Mode.

While Private Mode is locked, CherryPic blocks actions that affect private tags (such as merging them), and Remove Unused Tags leaves private tags alone. Unlock Private Mode first.
